Which regions have been affected the most by climate change?

This Geography lesson provides an engaging, inquiry-based way for learners to explore the impacts of climate change.

Learners study maps showing changes in precipitation, heat extremes and agricultural drought, predicting which regions they think have been most affected. Working in groups, they interpret the data, compare regions and discuss how and why these climate impacts vary around the world.

Step by step

  1. Introduce the focus: how climate change is affecting heavy precipitation, hot extremes, and agricultural/ecological drought in different regions.
  2. Ask learners to predict which world regions they think are most affected by each issue (brief jot notes or quick pair chat).
  3. Students answer questions on Heavy Precipitation, Hot Extremes, Agricultural and Ecological Drought and Which Regions have been Affected the Most?
  4. Learners complete the Geographical information systems activity.
  5. Optional plenary: Write a short letter to a local MP, using evidence from the maps to justify the need for local climate action (priorities and feasible local measures).
